Utah State Loses to Georgia State 45-22 in Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Boise, Idaho In the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl earlier this evening, hopes for a victorious conclusion to their season were shattered as they fell 45-22 against Georgia State Panthers. Though the tall task of stopping Georgia State's high-powered offense was a valiant effort, it fell just short. The Aggies allowed 643 yards of total offense in that Potato Bowl record setting performance by their opponents.

Panthers Stampede Early:

An early bath The first quarter alone saw Georgia State score three touchdowns to establish their dominance over the field. The Panthers' quarterback, Darren Grainger directed their offensive attack to the tune of 368 yards passing with three touchdowns. He also added another two scores on the ground. But the Aggies were unable to contain Grainger's dual-threat capabilities. He broke free for big plays time and again throughout the game.

Aggies Find Offense, but Defense Falters:

In the second half, quarterback Levi Williams and Utah State 's offense regained their rhythm. Williams had 232 passing yards and two TDs, including a 35-yard strike to Jalen Royals. His pass also broke the schools single-season record for touchdown receptions. Yet offensive success could not hide their defensive woes. The Panthers broke another Potato Bowl record with 386 yards of rushing, and they gouged the Aggies 'defense for huge plays again and again.

Disappointing Finish for Utah State:

The loss ends a disappointing end to the season that started so promising for Utah State. With a 6-7 record exactly the same as last year, there's some bad news for both Aggie fans and players: They ended their season with an ugly five-game losing streak.

Bright Spots Despite Loss:

For Utah State, there were some bright spots despite the loss. Meanwhile, defensive lineman Paul Fitzgerald notched up three sacks. The Royals record-breaking touchdown reception adds a touch of silver to the defeat. Nevertheless, the Aggies will have to shore up their weaknesses in defense and demonstrate greater consistency on offense if they hope for future championships.

Quotes:

Utah State Head Coach Blake Anderson: It is clearly a bitter pill to swallow. Georgia State played the game of their lives, and we just couldn't get anything going on our side at all. We have much work ahead in the offseason, but I feel this squad will rebound next year stronger than ever.
Georgia State Head Coach Shawn Elliott: 'This is a tremendous victory for our program. Our players played the game we wanted to play and it was an outstanding end to this football season, as well as going into next year.'
Looking Ahead:

The 2023 season is now finished, but the road goes on for both Utah State and Georgia St. The Aggies will try to learn from their mistakes and put together a better squad next year. Meanwhile, the Panthers can party with their Potato Bowl win and prepare for even greater glory in future years.
