On Friday, December 22nd in Omaha, Nebraska the high school basketball scene was ablaze with excitement as teams struggled to win spots for themselves at various holiday tournaments. Here's a quick recap of some of the key scores and highlights from the night:
Metro Holiday Tournament
- Papillion-La Vista Monarchs 58, Omaha South Packers 45: In an exciting semifinal, the Monarchs defeated the Packers. The first half was a tightly contested affair that ended in an 18-18 tie. In the fourth quarter, however, Papillion--La Vista's defense dominated and carried its team to victory. Eric Ingwerson and Marrius Cantu of the Monarchs provided key baskets, along with defensive stops to help lead them on charges.
- Papillion-La Vista South Titans 67, Elkhorn South Storm 54: In the other semifinal, it was a balanced attack by the Titans which defeated the Storm. The depth and offensive firepower of the Papillion-La Vista South squad was on display as four players scored in double figures.
Other Notable Scores
- Gretna East Griffins girls 56, Burke Bulldogs girls 42: The Griffins crushed the Bulldogs in impressive fashion. Gretna East pulled out the win with a strong second half performance, emphatically led by Addison LaRock.
- Millard West Wildcats girls 62, Buena Vista Broncos girls 48: The Wildcats pulled out a tough win over the Broncos. Millard West's swarming defense and effective offense was just too much for Buena Vista to cope with.
- Bellevue East Thunderbirds boys 65, Benson Bunnies boys 58: The Thunderbirds won a nail-biting contest with the Bunnies. Bellevue East's free throws down the stretch proved to be their clinching.
