High school basketball season underway for Cowichan teams

Duncan, BC – It is heating up indoors for Cowichan Valley's hardwood as the senior girls and boys of Cowichan Secondary have their basketball seasons underway. With talent and hard work on display, teams coached by both passionate and experienced leaders are creating excitement not only for players but also among fans from the entire community.

In the welcome back tournament, senior girls win silver.

Last month, the Cowichan Senior Girls Basketball team impressed at Duncan Christian School's annual Welcome Back tournament. The talented girls were led by tournament all-star Carla Higuera, players of the game Amelie Brach and Raffie Barrack. They fought hard against tough opponents before beating Cowichan Christian School 69-55 in their openerand Shawnigan LakeSchool 67-50 to reach the final. Although losing to Maple Ridge 51-23 in the championship game, Cowichan girls' grit and determination earned their second place.

North Island Kickoff: Senior Boys Battle Back

While the DCS girls were entertaining their senior companions, on November 30-December1 the senior boys also decided to get away from it all at a North Island Kickoff tournament held by Campbell River Christian School. In their first game, the boys won a hard-fought battle against Brooks of Powell River before easily defeating Port Hardy to win entry into the tournament final. The last was a nail-biter which pitted the DCS boys, who had fallen behind by 20 points at halftime against Campbell River Christian. But it took overtime to decide that one. While they had come up short by one basket in the end, their comeback effort illustrated the team's fighting spirit.

Hope for the Remainder of the Season

Their early season outings have been full of flashes of brilliance for both Cowichan teams, and fans are hopeful it will carry over as the weeks go by. Their coaches note their players' commitment and team spirit, indicating that the improvements made reflected a desire to move forward. Armed with the enduring support of Cowichaners, these talented student-athletes have a strong work ethic and are ready to take on their leagues fight for top spots.
