FHSAA 2024-25 high school football classification alignment

The FHSAA has released the eagerly anticipated alignment for 2024-‘5 and ’25-’6 high school football seasons, which marks a sea change in competitive structures. On December 12th, the FHSAA Board of Directors voted to return back away from its new Metro/ Suburban system and revert instead to more traditionally defined categories based on enrollment. It also decided that a separate class for rural schools was needed, given their smaller size.
Highlights of the New Classification System:
- Eight Classifications: The new system is split into eight classifications: 1R, 1A, 2A,3 A ,4 A.5A and so on to cl7 a. Size of student enrollment decides each classification.
- Rural Classification: For smaller schools with unique geographic problems, a new rural classification--1R--has been set up. This division assures competitive parity for these schools while promoting balanced competition in the other classifications.
- Enrollment Ranges: The enrollment ranges for each classification have been adjusted to conform with current school populations. This makes for a more equal distribution of schools within the classifications.
- District Assignments: District assignments are still tentative, but will be announced within the next few months. Schools can appeal their classification or district assignment through FHSAA Policy 12.
Reactions to the New System:
Some coaches, administrators and fans are happy to return classifications based on enrollment; other reactions have been mixed. Many supporters believe this will level the playing field and stimulate yet another round of regional rivalry. Some have worries about travel burdens, competitive imbalances (especially in the higher classifications).
This is a big change for Florida high school football, said FHSAA Executive Director. “We feel this change will create not only a more fair competitive environment but one that preserves the best traditions of Florida football. There certainly will be adjustments, but we have every faith in its ability to help all schools and athletes.”
What's Next:
The FHSAA will continue to collaborate with schools and stakeholders on district assignments, as well as any concerns or appeals that may arise. Under the new classification system, battle lines have been drawn and conditions laid for an entirely different era of Florida high school football. Rivalries will be revived; stars born; state championship quests more exciting than ever before.
